LOOK INTO THE FUTURE...
MAYBE ITS WARMER
March 4, 2010
. -

Based in Baltimore, MD, Future Islands has been working on their new album entitled In Evening Air, to be released this May. This is their second album to date, and will be their first release under the label Thrill Jockey. Sam Herring’s raspy voice carries melodies over synthesized beats, steady drums, and strong bass lines. I saw Future Islands this past summer, opening for Dan Deacon. They were a perfect warm-up and got everyone pumped up to dance. It was a grand old sweaty time! This album shows that Future Islands is growing as a group and won’t be going anywhere, anytime soon.

Check out their released single, Tin Man, and wait, anticipate the rest of their spring album and accompanying warm weather.

HERE COMES THE SUN
WITH SYNTHESIZERS
January 19, 2010
. -

The Ruby Suns are set to release a new album on March 2nd via Sub Pop Records, entitled Fight Softly. Judging from their released single "Cranberries", they have decided to move onwards in a more synthesized direction, diverging from their bells, live drums, and international flair that so encompassed their first album, Sea Lion. According to singer-songwriter Ryan McPhun, this newer album is "probably the opposite of what I did for the last one", adding more synthetic elements such as effected guitar and and bigger bass. Those of you that appreciated The Ruby Suns as a breath of fresh air from the overly synthed out music scene may find yourselves disappointed with the new album. However, Fight Softly still maintains a hint of  Sea Lion, with a dash of techno.

Check out "Cranberries" below. It starts out as you might anticipate, but ends up somewhere in the land of Ace of Base. To me, its a strange combination, but it works, and...I still don't want to turn it off.

They are touring with Toro y Moi this spring.

HOLLY JOLLY HOLLY

Tis the season for catching up on the music world, while on a short break from work or school or whatever else you are doing. After perusing the interwebs for some catchy tunes, I happened upon Holly Miranda, a once-Detroit resident turned Brooklynite equipped with a soft, raspy voice that beautifully enhances acoustic guitar, lovely harmonies, and trumpets. Her Sleep on Fire EP can be purchased here and was produced by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio. Kanye West has also hyped her music (before Pitchfork! scene points), and she recently toured with The Antlers and The XX. Check her out, because according to Vanity Fair, she is the "real deal", and why would they ever lie to you?

REVIEW: Allison Weiss - ...Was Right All Along

ALLISON WEISS LOVES TALKING IN THE THIRD PERSON
November 18, 2009
. -

At once a University of Georgia student and at the same time a touring singer-songwriter, Allison Weiss is looking to make it big. And, with a sound that has always flirted with commercially comfortable, Weiss' crooning sounds equally apropos as a pitch for a new MacBook as it does an anthem for romantic angst. For a full time college student, Weiss is a busy and shameless self-promoter--hawking her albums and harnessing the power of the web to build a fan following. Through Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, iLike, and YouTube, she has crafted a brand--supporting her music with a blur of goodies and tchotchkes that appeal to an increasingly wired teenage population.

Keep reading this ⇓

It's been just over a year since her last major release, conceivably long enough for Weiss to date and breakup with a boy; to provide fodder for yet another installment of work in a growing cannon of work that is painfully adherent to the "boy breaks girl's heart" genre. From unabashedly indie Athens, GA, Allison Weiss is something of an anomaly; living in the space between pop tartlets and over stylized, tragically cool indie rock. Previous work has revealed a deft touch in balancing catchy with creative, but early selections from her newest album, "...was right all along" veer more than ever before in to 'catchy' territory. The result is a sound that is still ever reminiscent of a purer version of Weiss, but produced to a tidy end that removes the charms that came from her acoustic sound. The single "Fingers Crossed" is an enjoyable, if not predictable riff--but Weiss' wispy vocals are washed out by a busy drumline. For a singer-songwriter whose lyrics are generally pretty transparent, "Fingers Crossed" was a challenging meditation on boys and staying dry. Or at least that's what it seems like. The refreshing, summery "From You to Me" is distinctly Allison Weiss, with a peppiness that blends post-teen angst tartness with a tasty, sweet, quirkiness. It's a bubbly, perky two and a half minutes--and while it doesn't reinvent the pop music wheel, it is comfortable like an old blanket--cozy and unpretentious. Not fussy. Still, behind the pretty sounds, the comfortable melodies, are lyrics rich with heartache. Careful listeners will find a bitter pill of pain and romantic plight behind the sweetness and quirk of Weiss' foot-tapping-worthy melodies.

This is the summery CD to an adventurous compilation released two years ago, "Winter Mixtape". There, largely without production, Allison strums and croons--and the result is both darker, sadder, and reveals the extent of her strengths as a guitarist and vocalist. She's taking her new act on a limited roadshow, and bringing her self-described 'shameless self-promotion' along: selling "Allison Weiss is okay, I guess" t-shirts after each show. Or, pick up a button with her unofficial pancake logo on it. It, like Allison herself a playful mix of syrupy sweet and classically satisfying.

MONSTER MASH
October 29, 2009
. -

Monsters of Folk [Mike Mogis, M. Ward, Conor Oberst, Jim James] is certainly a folk supergroup of talented artists. Their self-titled album, released back in September, delivers all one would expect from this collaboration. However, the name Monsters of Folk is somewhat misleading, as their music stretches across genres, combining rock, folk, country, blues, and even a lil hip-hoppy sound here and there. Their album was entirely written, recorded and produced by its four members, in a studio also built by them in Omaha, Nebraska.

They are headed out on a large tour [even coming to Richmond, hooray!] and promises 2 1/2 hours of music, showcasing brand new songs from a future album and their current album, as well as old favorites from Bright Eyes, M. Ward, and My Morning Jacket catalogues. So, basically....it's going to be awesome.

SPIRITS OF THE RED CITY
October 27, 2009

Spirits of the Red City is an eight-person ensemble that creates wistful, melancholy folk tunes using cello, upright bass, accordion, guitar, viola and charming vocals. Many of the band members are siblings, which might explain how well the harmonies weave. I saw them this past Saturday in DC and I was blown away. Check out their album Hunter Moon.

DEAD MAN'S BONES BOASTS STAR POWER ON FALL TOUR
OSCAR-NOMINATED HEARTTHROB RYAN GOSLING PLAYS FOLK-POP WITH A FRIEND
October 7, 2009
Dead Man's Bones boasts star power on fall tour

Best known for his acting (The Notebook, Lars and the Real Girl) Ryan Gosling is following the well-paved path of actors like Jason Schwartzman and Jared Leto and forming a band along with pal Zach Shields. Dead Man's Bones plays indie folk-pop that sounds a lot better than actors' bands usually do, and a little darker. Gosling and Shields originally bonded over their love of scary stuff: monsters, zombies, ghosts, etc. Their new album, Never Let a Lack of Talent Get You Down, appropriately comes out this month (10/6), just in time for Halloween.

ISLAND BOWL
October 2, 2009

Last week, Islands played their second tour date in Richmond, VA at Plaza Bowl. I was there, had a little interview with the band and took some photos. They discussed their new album Vapours, breaking toilets, and what kind of music they listen to in the tour van. The show itself was entertaining, with lots of dancing (on stage and off). They played mostly new stuff, but kept the crowd happy with such hits as "Rough Gem" and "Don't Call Me Whitney Bobby" from their first album. Here's what Nick Diamond and Jamie Thompson had to say:

Abigail Eisley: Welcome to Richmond, have you all ever been here before?

Nick Diamond: Yea, I think I was here 4 and ½ years ago, 5 ½ years ago. I was here 5 ½ years ago, that’s so weird.

Was that for another show?

ND: It was for another band, another show, another era. It was when the alternative music scene was raging, and we were on the forefront of the alternative music scene.

Jamie Thompson: Is that when you were playing in Temple of the Dogs?

ND: Well, I was Green River, but I joined Mother Love Temple after. This was at, I think, the University, it was a festival. Vague memories. We played and then we went to a house party and it was fun.

The house party was fun?

ND: It was fun until I broke the toilet. We had to leave.

JT: Its all fun and games until someone breaks a toilet!

ND: We had to leave right away. Anyway. A long time ago.

Keep reading this ⇓

So, about your new album, there are definitely some noticeable differences between your new album and the past two. How did you develop these new sounds? Specifically I noticed some more synthy-sounds, and of course the auto-tune.

ND: How did we develop them?

Yes, what was the thought process behind them?

ND: Well, the line-up changed in this band for the record and that sort of predicated the sonic shift, so I had these songs demoed that I felt like needed to go in a certain direction. The players that joined I felt were able to pull it off most accurately and faithfully. So that’s kind of the way it happened. The early Unicorns stuff was really synthesizer - you know, affectionate towards synthesizers, so this was like going back to those sorts of areas, loading stuff up with synths.

And you said the line-up changed, which is also noticeable seeing you guys play. Did that happen just because people were doing other projects?

ND: Yeah, some. It was a combination of things. Some people were doing other projects, some were having different life changes, like starting families, and it was just a real musical shift in the band. It was just a real sea change with the aesthetic and the output. Its always in flux, this band has never had a constant line-up, so it doesn’t preclude those people from ever playing with Islands again, its constantly changing.

As I was reading about your album, I saw that you had collaborators in production and also in playing the music.

ND: On the new record? Actually it was all the same, it was actually a pretty tight-knit group. The band that played tonight was the band that played on the record and did everything. We had one song with some guests who played horns, trumpets, and saxophone and trombone, but other than that we were very insular.

Did the album develop between the four of you? Or was it mostly from before?

ND: Let these guys answer the question.

JT: Let me answer the question!

You all played together, and you recorded together, was it developed together?

JT: Basically, Nick had worked all the structures of the songs out and had recorded demos that were mostly him playing guitar and singing or him playing keys and singing and maybe like a stock drum loop from GarageBand or something, and we went into the studio with this guy Chris Cody who was a producer who functioned as an arbitrating ear to decide things. For the most part, the arrangements and things came out in the studio. A lot of it came down to talking back and forth ‘you know this would be cool if it had a twangy guitar in it, why don’t we have this here’ and trying things out. We had to do things really quickly because we didn’t have very long to record it. Luckily the Gordon brothers, who are the other two you haven’t spoken to, are geniuses on every instrument, so they could pretty much do whatever needed to be done.

How was it for you coming back after a short hiatus?

JT: Well, the hiatus was three years, which was reasonably long. It’s really weird, it actually took me by surprise. I was living in Berlin, and Nick came on tour with Islands and Evan who’s in the band now was playing bass, because Patrice, who was the other bass player had a kid, and Evan and Jordie are in this other band called The Magic, and we’re all from the same little town and I’ve known them forever. I saw The Magic play, I saw their first show actually and I thought ‘oh these guys are awesome’. I gave Nick their CD and he really liked it and brought them on tour. Evan came and filled in and then they kind of hijacked me, they were like ‘Hey, we’ve been talking about this record, we really want to do it. Do you want to come make the record?’ The idea of doing a record again with Nick, I always wanted to do and then with my old buddies from my hometown it seemed too good to be true. I was just going to do the record, and then I went and recorded it, and I was like, ‘oh I want to tour again.’

You guys have worked together before for so long, so…

JT: Yea, everyone in this band I’ve played with like a million times.

Were you in on the process of deciding the album’s title? How was that decided?

JT: The title, I definitely had nothing to do with that. The title’s one of the songs, but I don’t know because I had nothing to do with that!

Hi! You’re back.

ND: Hi, I’m back.

How did you decide on the album’s title or the song’s title? Whichever came first.

ND: Both. Actually a rapper named Subtitle, a friend of ours was at a show in Switzerland that we played and remarked after a show how the crowd seemed to be catching vapors off of us, and I had never really heard that expression so I was attracted to it. I thought it was an interesting image to cast a spell and then I learned the roots and origins of it. It actually traces to Medieval times, when magicians would allegedly be casting spells and controlling people. That’s where it was coming from – the record casting a spell on people, people really falling under its powers.

Making them dance on the stage?

ND: Yes, exactly.

You recorded this album mostly in New York?

ND: All of it actually.

That’s the first time you’ve ever recorded in New York?

ND: Yes, I moved there about two years ago so, it was a really natural thing, it was just a result of living there, making a record in the town that I lived.

Do you think that affected the development of the record at all?

ND: A little bit. There were moments of the songs that were inspired, the first one especially that were inspired by living in New York. I think the contemporary sound had something to do with it. Feeling really involved, with the current state of things, I guess.

You are about to head out on your big tour, correct?

ND: Yes, this is our second date.

Where are you headed to next?

ND: Chapel Hill.

Are you excited about that?

ND: Yes, this band Chain and the Gang are playing which will be cool. It’s the singer of the band called The Makeup and he was also in The Nation of Ulysses and a bunch of others: Scene Creamers and Weird War. A bunch of cool bands he’s been in, so I’m excited to see that.

How do you all pass the time on the bus?

ND: Bus? No, no, a tiny little van.

How do you not get sick of each other?

ND: Just keep pressing seek on the radio dial, hoping we will find something decent to listen to.

So you don’t have an ipod or anything that you pick music from?

ND: No, the situation we have right now is just a cassette tape. We only have this van for a couple days, we are upgrading in a couple days to something nicer, when we’ll be able to have an ipod situation. Until then…

Do you all have certain favorite bands you like to listen to together?

ND: No, we have wildly varying tastes. He likes Seals and Croft, [points] that’s Evan.

Evan Gordon: Summer Breeze.

ND: I’m more of a thug…homo-thug kind of guy. I like homo-rap. Sissy bounce. Jordie’s into the 1950s if you can tell, he’s the one with the pompadour.

X MARKS THE SPOT
September 29, 2009
X Marks the Spot

The XX is a quartet of 20 year olds based in London, England. With hints of Radiohead, Interpol, Aaliyah, and CocoRosie, the XX successfully combines echoes of hip hop with rock with lounge music with dance in their first album "XX". They produced their self-titled album and released it this past August. They are currently on a worldwide tour, supporting and headlining -- about 1/3 of the shows are sold out already, so get your tix soon! The album itself is comprised of 11 deceptively simple songs with hip beats and sexy lyrics. The vocals of Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim intertwine, compliment, and provide the necessary friction that makes the music irresistable. Probably due to their musical education background, their stoic style demands attention. For some reason I liked them better after I watched the "Crystalised" music video, after the jump!
