Dan Melchior has been on a tear in the first half of 2009, leaving a double album and four vinyl singles in his wake. This cool-as-cucumber song is off the double album, Thankyou Very Much, available from S-S Records. Das Menace groove along with a simple beat and graceful melody; you almost feel them looking away as Melchior saddles up to the microphone with the hipster mecca Williamsburg squarely in his crosshairs.
He doesn't deride the movement as much as he is appalled at the lack of conviction. The snide insults, "ironic flowers" and "old news," are clever jabs, but his anger is spelled out in the chorus: "all these musicians who don't write any songs." That is, saying you're a musician doesn't make you one. I suppose releasing material enough for three albums in five months qualifies you, though. You can counter Melchior however you see fit, but you can't dispute the fact that he walks the walk. We'll probably be too busy dancing to argue, anyhow.
