Sometime last year, Hunx of Gravy Train decided to start releasing his own (solo?) material. It's much more garage rock than Gravy Train, which doesn't necessarily make it better.
"Cruisin'" opens with an aped New Order riff, but quickly sparkles into their own song, which is highly enjoyable, if for no other reason than the fact that fifty years later, someone is making songs that sound like this (which, for the record, is one of the best songs ever). Still, the chorus lacks bite, and after a listen or two, the verses are far more enjoyable than the melody-less chorus.
The second song, "You Better Tell That Girl," is Hunx's best song, and yet somehow suffers from the same problem that afflicted "Cruisin'" -- a toothless chorus. Musically, the verses are powerful, and Hunx has dropped his voice for a bit of gravitas. I'm totally feeling the vibe, but they get to the chorus and the mood is ruined.
The songs are good enough to be enjoyed, but the choruses hold them back from making any end-of-the-year playlists. If you're interested, keep an eye out for their vinyl reissue of the Gay Singles on Matador.
