Yo La Tengo!!! Can they really ever do wrong? Well, maybe, but not according to their twelfth album, Popular Songs, which is released state-side today. Still a collaboration of Ira Kaplan [guitar/vocals], Georgia Hubley [drummer/vocalist] and James McNew [bassist/vocalist], Yo La Tengo celebrates its 25th year of makin' sweet, poppy tunes. The album is typical of YLT's style, many of the songs come as no surprise, so If you weren't expecting an extreme shift, you will very much enjoy this album as an indie-pop journey through YLT's musical past. A bit of a dark start, "Here to Fall" is just what you expect from the talented threesome.
As the album progresses, each song takes on a life of its own, while maintaining strength as an album. My favorites are "Nothing to Hide", and "If It's True", two of the shorter songs that keep you dancin to the end, followed by three 9 minute + epic ballads begin [some more epic than others, you may wish to skip ahead during the noisy 15 minute "And the Glitter is Gone"]. The rest of the album is an easy listen, full of catchy lyrics and funky beats. Yo La Tengo is a true veteran in the indiepop scene, and has delivered yet another unique album of popular songs.
